2005

The beautiful garden displays at the Spring Home/Garden Show demonstrate some of the best design talent in San Diego. Unlike so many garden shows, limited by the plant palette of a single climate zone, here we see the extreme diversity of plants and designs that are appropriate and thrive in our temperate climate. Given this diversity and the incredible creativity of the Garden Masters, we present one of the greatest garden shows in the country.

Experience
THE GARDEN MASTERS

The 2005 Spring Home/Garden Show, March 4-6, 2005, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, will once again feature 21 original garden displays created by many of the region's foremost garden-design and installation Masters. This great "Show within a Show" has quickly become the region's top garden design showcase event.

The theme, THE GARDEN MASTERS, was selected by show organizers to provide a stage to display the broad and diverse range of fine professional skills and products available in San Diego. Our region's resources are world-class. Visiting THE GARDEN MASTERS is a great way to see the exciting talent and materials now available to homeowners.

Our theme, THE GARDEN MASTERS, each year remains the same for it embodies the spirit of the show and the inspirations of the designers. Each participating "Garden Master" creates their own garden design theme, and the variety is always exciting and always appropriate for local gardens. Areas of interest to be showcased include: low-water use, color, creative hard scapes, garden structures, water gardens, and much more.

This is a modern architectural and sculptural landscape with a Japanese Zen touch. Its strengths are in the quiet, defined lines, granite water basin, huge boulders, dark with round slate accents. Pacific Horticulture Award for Horticultural Excellence

Unifying the home and garden with outdoor living spaces has long been a Mediterranean tradition. The garden's Mediterranean ambiance is enhanced through the use of water-wise trees and plants, the soft patinas of stone and antique roof tiles, and through the use of rustic architectural elements, inviting shelter from the hot sun. A covered loggia offers an inviting place to relax and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the garden until a tasty informal meal is served under the grape arbor. The warmth of the fireplace reduces the chill for long evenings under the stars. The garden's outdoor living and entertaining space can be enjoyed year round surrounded by four seasons of horticultural interest.

Not Limited to Blue
Garden Master: Brandon Bullard
If your favorite color is blue, this garden’s for you. Its color theme was inspired by Blues Clues. The planting material consists of mostly succulents. South African tree aloes provide height. Aloes and agaves help to carry through the theme.

Child's Delight
Garden Master: Bill Tall

Most Appealing to Children

Focused on planting the seeds for future gardeners, this is a garden to intrigue and delight the small people. Many of us know the joy of planting our first vegetables, then eating and sharing the harvest. Child-sized tools and implements, a pond with fish by which to dream and wonder, such are the joys for children.

Massachusetts Horticultural Society Medal for Design Excellence

When we were children gardens had a special magic. We revisit that magic from an adult perspective in this somewhat rustic romantic garden. Ornamental grasses allude to remembered meadows, full of adventure and imagination. Daydream as you swing gently on the swing, taking time to consider just what to ask for from the wishing well.

Palms of Evergreen
Garden Master: Wally Kearns

Most Educational

Hold onto your hat, this palm grove takes you in all directions! Take a look at the fascinating diversity of palms. Short ones, tall ones, fat ones, skinny ones, set off by waves of color and different, unusual tropical plants. Just feel the energy and excitement.

The White Tropics
Garden Master: Tiger Palafox

Best Interpretation of Theme

Most Creative Use of Space

Seldom does a tropical landscape focus on a theme of white, but look how effective it can be! From white fuchsias to begonias, the landscape depicts a vision of a modern, more sophisticated tropical garden. The exotic kidney shaped pool and right-angle fountains are very effective in evoking a sense of place that is familiar, yet different, in a good kind of way.

Palms and Pines
Garden Master: Anita E.Green/Steve George
Palms and pines are two features commonly seen together along our San Diego skyline, in our landscapes and private spaces. In this garden they also represent a prehistoric horticultural relationship, being some of the oldest of the tall plants living on our planet today. Walk the paths through the palms and pines mixed with trees from the magnolia family, oldest of the flowering plants. Many of our smaller shrubs and perennials, readily found throughout our region today, also bear this prehistoric lineage. But, come now, and walk along our garden paths and enjoy these surprises.

With Respect for Trees
Garden Master: Tricia Daley

Perfection in Nomenclature

Trees are the majestic representations of nature. They can form beautiful peaceful groves or single statuistic focal points. They provide us with fresh air, shade, clean water, shelter, products and food. Trees protect us from storms, high heat, cold winds, soil erosion and even noise pollution. Their beauty is unmatched, their value within landscapes are often not recognized. This woodscape includes multiple species in a manner that brings out our enjoyment of a forest. Follow the meandering paths near the stream bed over bridges and opening to a secluded patio. The arbors and bridge rails honor fallen trees from storms or fire that were recycled for these rustic garden elements. The beauty of trees are recognized in this peaceful garden.

Art in the Garden
Garden Master: Paul DiMartini

Sculpture has graced gardens since early times. Here the sculptures take center stage and are each complemented by a small bed of plant material.

Six – created by Syd Paris
Simple sinuous form takes on complexity with the natural colorations permeating the alabaster sculpture. The artist begins with a boulder which looks like the exposed end and with great talent and effort composes and develops the finely finished contemporary piece you see here.

Sacrifice and Reward – created by Syd Paris
More intricate and complex, this piece is made of carerra marble, one of the finest carving materials. Contemporary and abstract, view the piece from all sides and levels to appreciate the way the image changes at different angles. The silhouette of shapes with interesting profiles invoke a wonderful sense of depth, volume and texture of the polished stone.
